Hashem Restaurant

Hashem is the most famous cheap eating place in Amman — a street-level institution operating from a doorway in the downtown since 1952, serving ful (fava bean stew), falafel, and hummus around the clock. It is deliberately no-frills: plastic chairs on the pavement, shared tables, tea in metal glasses, and constant turnover. The food is exceptionally good and a full meal costs almost nothing.

Everyone from kings to construction workers has eaten here, and the restaurant is genuinely proud of this fact. The ful, made with dried fava beans slowly cooked with lemon and olive oil, is the dish to order; the falafel is fried to order and served hot. Come at breakfast (7–9am) or late evening for the most atmospheric visit.
