The grand tree-lined pedestrian boulevard that runs north-south through central Bishkek, from the train station up past Oak Park to the Chuy Avenue intersection. Originally called Dzerzhinsky Boulevard after the founder of the Soviet secret police, it was renamed Erkindik (Freedom) at independence.
The walk takes maybe 30 minutes one way at a comfortable pace and is the best single way to get a feel for the centre of the city: marble government buildings, embassies in old merchants' houses, open-air cafés in summer, and the constant relief of shade. The Russian-style Holy Resurrection Cathedral sits just to the east.
