The city hippodrome on the southern fringe of Bishkek hosts horse races and demonstrations of traditional Kyrgyz horse sports — kok-boru (a rough team game played with a headless goat carcass), at-chabysh (long-distance racing), kyz-kuumai (a chasing-the-girl game on horseback), and tyiyn-enmei (picking up coins at a gallop).
Major events cluster around Independence Day (31 August) and the early-autumn World Nomad Games. Tickets are cheap; ask around in advance for race-day schedules, as they are not always widely posted.
