Old Town

Historic shophouse district and white coffee heartland

Ipoh's Old Town, on the west bank of the Kinta River, is the heart of the historic city — a compact grid of shophouses, colonial government buildings, and grand institutional facades left over from the tin boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wander along Jalan Bandar Timah (formerly Leech Street) for the best surviving row of Chinese shophouses, past old clan associations, banks and kopitiams. The area is also where most of the famous Ipoh eating places are concentrated — Nam Heong and Sin Yoon Loong for white coffee, Thean Chun for nga choi kai, Lou Wong for bean sprout chicken — all within a few blocks of each other.
