Built during the tin boom and sometimes known as the "Taj Mahal of Ipoh", the railway station is an elegant mix of Mughal and Moorish styles with long white arcades, verandahs and towers. It was designed by AB Hubback, the same architect responsible for the Kuala Lumpur railway station, and opened in 1917. The building still houses the grand old Station Hotel upstairs, where colonial passengers once waited for the Singapore train under slow ceiling fans; the ground floor has been carved up into shops, and the facade shows its age, but it remains the most photogenic single building in Ipoh.
