Imelda Marcos's palace built almost entirely of coconut — palm wood, coconut shells, shell inlay, even coconut-fibre upholstery. Over 70 per cent of its materials come from the coconut tree. Now used for state functions; guided tours at set times.

A story
Imelda Marcos commissioned it in 1978 for Pope John Paul II's planned 1981 visit. The pope, informed of the US$37 million price tag when half the country lived in poverty, refused to set foot in it.
