Cultural Center of the Philippines

The main performing arts venue, designed by Leandro Locsin, with galleries and the main CCP theater

The Cultural Center of the Philippines complex on the Manila Bay reclamation area is the country's main venue for performing arts — ballet, opera, theater, and classical music — and also houses galleries of contemporary Filipino art. The main building, designed by Leandro Locsin in 1969, is one of the finest examples of Filipino modernist architecture: a monolithic mass raised on columns above the bay, with clean lines and good views of the water.

The main theater stages productions by national companies including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines, and the Tanghalang Pilipino theater company. A schedule of current productions is available on the CCP website. The complex is also the site of the Manila Film Center nearby, a more complicated monument to Marcos-era ambition, and the Folk Arts Theater.

A story
The CCP was built by Imelda Marcos in 1969 as the centrepiece of her project to give Manila a world-class cultural identity. The project was funded in part by Ferdinand Marcos's government and reflected Imelda's ambitions for the city. The building, designed by National Artist Leandro Locsin, was so associated with the Marcos regime that its status after the 1986 revolution was complicated; it survived and operates normally today.
