Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

The largest American overseas military cemetery, with 17,206 graves from World War II

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Taguig is a meticulously maintained American Battle Monuments Commission site covering 152 acres. The graves are arranged in curving rows on a carefully manicured lawn, each marked with a white marble cross or Star of David. Two curved memorial walls record the names of 36,285 servicemen missing in action across the Philippine Islands and surrounding waters.

The site is open to visitors and is quiet and respectful. The visitors' centre provides context for the Pacific War campaigns. It is located within Bonifacio Global City, one of Manila's most upscale modern districts, which gives the visit an interesting contrast — the ordered cemetery surrounded by luxury condominiums and commercial towers built on former American military base land.

A story
The Philippines suffered some of the most brutal fighting of the Pacific War. The liberation of Manila in 1945 alone killed over 100,000 Filipino civilians. The cemetery, established in Taguig within the modern-day Bonifacio Global City, holds 17,206 graves — the largest American overseas military cemetery in the world — of soldiers who died in the Pacific theater.
