Plaza de Roma is Intramuros' old main square, framed by Manila Cathedral, the Palacio del Gobernador, and the Ayuntamiento. At its center stands a monument to King Carlos IV of Spain, erected by the colonial government after a smallpox vaccine shipment reached the Philippines. The plaza is a short stop, but it helps anchor the civic and religious core of old Manila.
