The legendary morning soy-milk shop of Taipei: a second-floor walk-up over Shandao Temple MRT, with queues that regularly start at 5am and stretch down two flights of stairs onto the street. The menu is short and quintessentially Taiwanese — xiandoujiang (salty soy milk, served warm with chopped pickle, scallions, deep-fried dough sticks, and a soft-boiled egg), sweet soy milk, shaobing (flaky baked sesame flatbread, plain or stuffed), and youtiao (Chinese fried dough sticks).
A bowl of xiandoujiang and a shaobing-with-egg sandwich is the standard Taipei breakfast. The shop closes at around 12.30pm and the queue moves quickly, even when it looks impossible.
