Modern Toilet commits fully to its bit: diners sit on stylised toilet-seat stools at glass tables built over plumbing fixtures, and food arrives in miniature squat-pots, urinals and bathtubs. The menu is mostly curry rice and ice cream sundaes, deliberately styled to look unappetising — chocolate soft-serve piled to resemble what the restaurant's name implies — though the food itself is ordinary, inoffensive Taiwanese-Japanese fusion fare.
It's reached down Lane 50 (nicknamed Tattoo Street locally) off Xining South Road, a few minutes' walk from Ximen MRT Exit 6. The restaurant closed for over three years during the pandemic and reopened in 2023; it now survives as one of only two Modern Toilet branches left anywhere, the other in Shilin. Go for the novelty and the photos, not the food — it's a one-time gimmick rather than a meal worth repeating.
