Qui Nhon

South-central Vietnamese coastal city, a working port with beaches between mountains and the sea.

Qui Nhon is a mid-sized coastal city in Binh Dinh province, tucked between mountains and the sea on Vietnam's south-central coast. Long overshadowed by the tourist juggernaut of Hoi An to the north and Nha Trang to the south, it has stayed quieter and more genuinely Vietnamese than either — a working port and fishing town that happens to have excellent beaches.

The city sits on a peninsula jutting into Thi Nai Lagoon, with a long crescent of sandy beach stretching along its eastern edge. The coastline is clean and rarely crowded. West of the city, the mountains rise quickly, and the highway south climbs to a pass with panoramic views back over the bay — one of the finer viewpoints on the whole coastal route.

Qui Nhon has cultural depth beyond its beaches. The region was once the heartland of the Cham kingdom, and several well-preserved Cham towers sit in the surrounding countryside. The city is also associated with Han Mac Tu, one of Vietnam's most celebrated early 20th-century poets, who spent his final years at a French leprosarium here and is buried on the hillside above town. The memorial and cemetery have an unexpectedly moving quality.

Travellers on a longer journey down the coast find Qui Nhon a good place to slow down for a day or two: good seafood, uncrowded beaches, interesting day trips into the hinterland, and a pace of life that hasn't been reshaped around tourism.
