Cathedral of St. James

Baroque cathedral with Asam frescoes and a Cranach altarpiece

Originally Gothic, the cathedral was rebuilt in high Baroque style between 1717 and 1724. The interior is lavishly decorated with ceiling frescoes and stucco work by the Asam brothers. Above the high altar hangs a celebrated Madonna and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The cathedral's carillon plays daily. It also contains the tomb of Archduke Maximilian III.
