Uzeyir Hajibeyov's House Museum

Uzeyir Hajibeyov, who lived in this apartment from 1949 until his death in 1948, was the central figure of Azerbaijani classical music: he wrote the country's first opera ("Leyli and Majnun", 1908), founded the conservatory, and composed the national anthem still in use today. The four-room museum preserves his study, his piano, and a substantial archive of manuscripts and personal letters.

It is a quiet, modest house-museum and a useful counterpoint to the bigger institutions. If you have any interest in mugham or in the Soviet-era reinvention of national music, an hour here adds context you won't find elsewhere.
