Ashkenazi Synagogue

The main Ashkenazi synagogue at 171 Dilara Aliyeva Street, opened in 2003, is one of the largest synagogues in the Caucasus, built to serve the European Jewish community that came to Baku with the late nineteenth-century oil boom. The community is now small but the building is well maintained and active.

Azerbaijan has an unusually peaceful record of inter-religious relations and Baku has had a continuous Jewish presence for centuries. The Mountain Jewish ("Tat") synagogue, used by the older Persian-speaking community, is a short walk away on Dilara Aliyeva Street and is also worth a look from the outside.
