National Flag Square

Baku waterfront plaza built around one of Azerbaijan’s most conspicuous national symbols.

National Flag Square is one of Baku's most explicit statements of state symbolism, a broad waterfront plaza laid out around an enormous Azerbaijani flag and mast. The scale is deliberately oversized, matching the city's Caspian-side habit of turning civic space into spectacle.

The square works best as part of a longer walk along the Baku Boulevard waterfront, especially around sunset when the flag, sea, and nearby skyline line up in the same view. It is not a subtle place, but it helps explain modern Baku's taste for monumental urban gestures.
