Château de Vêves

Picture-book medieval castle in the village of Celles

Address Rue de Furfooz 3, 5561 Celles

A small but extraordinarily photogenic medieval castle in the village of Celles, 10 km east of Dinant. Five circular towers cluster around a tight central courtyard, the whole thing rising straight out of a meadow with no defensive moat — the architecture is more aristocratic country house than fortress despite its medieval bones.

The current building is largely 15th-century, the home of the Beaufort-Spontin family who still own it. The interior tour covers furnished period rooms from the 15th through the 18th centuries, with strong armouries and tapestries. Open April to October only; closed on Mondays. Celles itself is one of the prettiest villages in Wallonia and worth lingering in afterwards.
