Rocks at Freÿr

Towering limestone cliffs on the Meuse, popular with climbers

Address Rochers de Freÿr, 5500 Dinant

A spectacular mass of limestone cliffs on the left bank of the Meuse, opposite the Castle of Freÿr, rising 120 metres straight out of the river. The site is one of Belgium's premier rock-climbing destinations — more than 250 routes have been bolted on the various faces — but you don't have to climb to appreciate it. The view from the Castle gardens on the opposite bank is the postcard shot of the lower Meuse.

A footpath runs along the top of the cliffs through woodland, with several viewpoints over the river. Easiest access from the small lay-by on the N96 road; the riverside walk from Dinant takes about 90 minutes. Combine with a boat trip up the Meuse from Dinant for the best perspective.
