Kayaking on the Lesse

Half-day kayak descent of the River Lesse from Houyet

Address Anseremme, 5500 Dinant

The most popular outdoor activity in the Dinant area: a kayak descent of the River Lesse from Houyet (or Gendron) downstream to Anseremme, where the Lesse joins the Meuse. Half-day or full-day trips run between Easter and late September. Two-seater kayaks are the standard; the route is gentle, the rapids small, and the scenery — passing directly below Walzin Castle, through the Lesse gorges — is excellent.

The main operator is Lesse Kayaks, based in Anseremme, with hourly buses running paddlers upstream to the launch points. No experience needed, life jackets provided, dry bags useful. Avoid hot summer Saturdays when the river is congested; midweek and shoulder season are much quieter. Bring a swimsuit for the inevitable swim.
