The Basilica of St. Cunibert is one of Cologne's twelve great Romanesque churches, and a worthwhile detour if you are tracing the city's medieval architecture beyond the cathedral. It stands near the Rhine in the northern part of the old town, with a quieter setting than the heavily visited churches closer to the central squares.
Inside, look for the high, spare Romanesque proportions and the stained glass, including windows that survived the Second World War. The church is especially useful for travellers who want to understand Cologne as a city of many parish and monastic churches, not only one monumental cathedral.
