Hahnentorburg

Medieval city gate on Rudolfplatz, one of Cologne's clearest surviving fortification landmarks.

Hahnentorburg is one of Cologne's surviving medieval city gates, standing on Rudolfplatz where the old walls once controlled the western approach to the city. Its twin towers and heavy stonework are a useful reminder that Cologne was a fortified medieval metropolis long before its modern boulevards and shopping streets.

The gate is easy to visit while moving between the centre and the Belgian Quarter. It is most interesting as urban context: a fragment of the old city wall system still holding its ground in a busy contemporary square.
