The Bach Museum occupies the Bose family house directly across from the Thomaskirche — the family were merchants and close friends of Bach, and he visited regularly. The museum covers his life and work with a mix of original documents, instruments, and interactive displays. Original Bach manuscripts are shown in rotating exhibitions; the Magical Sound Room allows you to hear the acoustics of the spaces where he worked.
The museum reopened after major renovation and is now one of the best music museums in Germany. The route through the building follows Bach's career from Eisenach to Leipzig, with particular attention to the 27 years he spent in this city. The gift shop has an excellent range of recordings, including early music labels that are not easy to find elsewhere.
