Zeitgeschichtliches Forum

Free museum on postwar German history, covering the GDR and the 1989 revolution

The Zeitgeschichtliches Forum (Forum of Contemporary History) is a free museum on Augustusplatz covering German history from 1945 to the present, with a particular focus on life in the GDR and the events of 1989. It is run by the federal German government and is genuinely excellent — not a dry archive but a thoughtfully designed exhibition with strong original objects, film footage, and personal testimonies.

The GDR section covers everyday life under socialism: the Trabant, the shortages, the surveillance culture, the attempt to build a different kind of society and the ways it broke down. The 1989 section follows the peaceful revolution day by day, with particular attention to Leipzig's role. It connects directly to the nearby Nikolaikirche and Stasi Museum for a coherent picture of the period. Entry is free.
