Egyptian Museum

University collection of Egyptian artefacts from Leipzig expeditions

Address Schillerstraße 6

The Egyptian Museum of the University of Leipzig holds around 7,000 objects spanning five millennia, from predynastic flints to Coptic textiles. The core of the collection comes from excavations led by Georg Steindorff in the early 20th century at sites including Giza and Aniba in Nubia. Highlights include painted coffins, mummy portraits, and a fine set of shabti figures.

The museum occupies a modern space in the Kroch-Hochhaus at the edge of Augustusplatz — look for the building with the two bronze bell-strikers on the tower. It is small enough to see in under an hour, and free to enter.
