La Ponta Castle is the ruined Venetian fortress in the centre of Akrotiri. Venice took Thira in 1207 and built this strongpoint over an earlier Byzantine watchtower, making use of one of the best defensive positions on the island.
The castle survived the Ottoman-Venetian wars but was badly damaged by the 1956 earthquake. Come for the history, the remaining stonework, and the view over Akrotiri and the southern end of Santorini.
