Built in the 8th century and modelled — at smaller scale — on its more famous namesake in Constantinople, Hagia Sofia is one of the great Byzantine churches that earned Thessaloniki its UNESCO listing. Look up: the dome holds a 9th-century mosaic of the Ascension, with Christ borne up by angels above the Apostles. The square outside is a pleasant place to sit with a coffee.
