Roman-era cylindrical monument with stunning mosaics

Address Plateia Agiou Georgiou, Thessaloniki

A vast brick cylinder built in 306 AD, probably as a mausoleum for the Roman emperor Galerius, who never got round to using it. It has been a church, a mosque (the slender minaret still stands beside it — the only one left in the city), and is again a church and occasional concert venue. Inside, fragments of extraordinary 4th-century mosaics survive on the dome and arches: gold-ground saints standing in front of fantastical architectural backdrops.
