The Church of Saint Catherine is one of the smaller Byzantine rewards in Thessaloniki's Ano Poli. Dating from the Palaiologan period, it was later converted into a mosque and then returned to church use, a layered history typical of the city's older neighbourhoods.
Its value is in proportion and survival rather than size. The brickwork, domes, and fragments of painted decoration belong to the UNESCO-listed group of Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, but the church sits quietly among ordinary streets. Visit while walking uphill through Ano Poli, when the city's Byzantine past feels less like a museum trail and more like part of the neighbourhood.
