Roman Forum

Excavated Roman agora with an odeon and colonnaded square

The Roman Forum of Thessaloniki lies in an open excavation pit just above Aristotelous Square, reached by stairs down from street level on Filippou Street. The site is free to enter and uncrowded even in summer. What survives is the lower level of the ancient agora complex: a long colonnaded square, a small odeon (restored and still used for concerts), a cryptoporticus corridor, and fragments of mosaic floor.

It's a useful place to understand the city's layered past — standing in the Roman agora, you can look up to see Byzantine church towers, Ottoman minarets, and modern apartment blocks all within a few hundred metres. The odeon has good acoustics and hosts occasional summer events; check local listings.

A story
The forum was built in the 2nd century AD and served as the civic and commercial centre of Roman Thessaloniki. When Galerius chose the city as his imperial capital in the late 3rd century, the forum had to be expanded to accommodate the extra administrative weight. Today it sits in an open-air excavation pit below street level — the modern city simply grew over it, and it was only discovered when a cinema was demolished in the 1960s.
