The Church of Prophet Elijah in Ano Poli is one of the finest late Byzantine churches in Thessaloniki, built in the early 14th century and retaining original frescoes in surprisingly good condition. The building uses the cross-in-square plan typical of the Palaeologan period, with four columns supporting the central dome and elaborate brickwork decoration on the exterior.
The interior is relatively small and intimate — the frescoes covering the walls and dome are faded but readable, showing saints and biblical scenes in the stylised Macedonian Byzantine manner. The church has been converted from Orthodox to mosque and back again over the centuries; the marks of these transitions are still legible in the fabric of the building. It sits in the upper lanes of Ano Poli, a short walk from the Eptapyrgio fortress, and the streets around it are among the quietest and most picturesque in the neighbourhood.
