Housed inside the wings of Buda Castle, the Hungarian National Gallery holds the country's most comprehensive collection of Hungarian art from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Highlights include a stunning array of Gothic wooden altarpieces from Upper Hungary, Romantic-era paintings by Mihaly Munkacsy and Viktor Madarasz, and the brooding landscapes of Tivadar Kosztka Csontvary. The collection is enormous — trying to see everything in one visit is futile, so pick an era that interests you and go deep. The building itself offers panoramic views from its upper-floor windows and dome terrace. Admission to permanent exhibitions is free for EU citizens, and modest for everyone else.
