Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo)

Venice's largest church — burial place of the doges, with Verrocchio's Colleoni outside

Santi Giovanni e Paolo — known in Venetian dialect as San Zanipolo — is the largest church in Venice, a vast Dominican brick basilica that served as the burial church of the doges. The exterior, on one of the finest campi in the city, is dominated by Verrocchio's bronze equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, widely considered one of the greatest Renaissance sculptures.

Inside, the scale is immense — the nave is 101 metres long and 38 metres high — and the walls are lined with doges' tombs of considerable artistic quality, representing several centuries of Venetian sculpted monuments. Paintings by Bellini, Veronese, and Titian are distributed through the chapels. The adjacent Scuola Grande di San Marco, with its ornate trompe l'oeil marble facade, now serves as a hospital; its ground floor is accessible.

A story
Bartolomeo Colleoni, the mercenary general whose bronze equestrian statue stands outside this church, left a fortune to Venice on condition that a monument be erected in his honour in Piazza San Marco. The Senate wanted the money but not the statue in their most prestigious square. They resolved the problem by placing it here, outside the Scuola Grande di San Marco instead. Technically they kept their promise.
