The hill of San Pietro, on the east bank of the Adige above Sant'Anastasia, commands the finest panoramic view of Verona: the red-tiled rooftops, the Arena, the Adige curving through the city, and the Lessini hills beyond. A Roman fort occupied the site, followed by a Scaliger castle and then an Austrian barracks (the current building, built 1853). The hill is reached by staircase from Piazza Castel San Pietro or by funicular; the terrace at the top, framed by old cypresses, is the definitive Verona viewpoint.
