One of Verona's finest Renaissance gates, designed by Michele Sanmicheli and built between 1542 and 1556 as part of the Venetian city walls. The gate takes its name from the Palio dell'Isola, the annual horse race whose turning point it marked. The outer façade is adorned with three arches and Doric columns; the stonework is elegant even by Sanmicheli's standards. The inner face is simpler but equally well-proportioned.
