The former Roman forum and the heart of medieval Verona. The square is animated by a daily market under white umbrellas; around it stand medieval towers, a Venetian column with the Lion of St Mark, the Baroque Palazzo Maffei, the 14th-century Gardello tower, and the fountain of Madonna Verona. The adjacent Piazza dei Signori, reached through the Arco della Costa, is quieter and framed by Renaissance palaces including the Loggia del Consiglio.
