Church of St Michael the Archangel

The Church of St Michael the Archangel closes the eastern end of Laisves Aleja with a huge neo-Byzantine dome and a blunt reminder of Kaunas under the Russian Empire. It was built in the 1890s for the imperial garrison and still dominates Independence Square.

The unusual extra is the dark catacomb route beneath the church, run as an experience by the Museum for the Blind. It is atmospheric, but not suitable for small children or anyone uncomfortable with tight, dark spaces.
