Church-Mosque of Ulcinj

The Church-Mosque of Ulcinj — also known as the Imperial Mosque or Kalaja Mosque — is one of the most intriguing buildings in Montenegro. Originally built as a Christian church, it was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule, and its unusual hybrid architecture reflects both functions: the original apse and nave remain visible beneath the later Islamic alterations.

The building sits inside the walls of the old citadel and has been through multiple transformations over its long history. It has been used at various times as a church, a mosque, and reportedly also as a granary during periods of military occupation. Today it stands as a testament to the layered history of a town that has changed hands many times — Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, and finally Montenegrin.
