Arbon

Swiss Lake Constance town with a medieval promontory old town and converted Saurer factory buildings.

Arbon is a small town on the southern shore of Lake Constance in the canton of Thurgau. Its old town sits on a promontory jutting into the lake, with the medieval Schloss Arbon and a cluster of half-timbered houses around it. The lakeside promenade is one of the prettiest on the Swiss side of the Bodensee.

The town has a long industrial history — the Saurer truck and textile machinery factory was based here for over a century, and the old factory buildings are gradually being converted into cultural spaces at the Saurer WerkZwei. The lakefront park, the views across to the German shore, and the relaxed pace make Arbon a pleasant stop between St. Gallen and Konstanz.

Guide

Getting There

Arbon is on the lakeside railway line between Rorschach and Konstanz, with regular services to both. From St. Gallen, change at Rorschach — the total journey takes around thirty minutes. Arbon also has a ferry connection across the lake to Friedrichshafen in Germany in summer. By car it sits on the main Bodensee road, a scenic alternative to the motorway.

Things to Do

Arbon is a quiet place best enjoyed at a slow pace: a walk along the lakefront, an hour in the castle museum, a swim from the Strandbad. The views across Lake Constance to the German shore and the Austrian Alps are the main attraction, and they're free.
