Fairy Rock (Rocher des Fées)

The Fairy Rock (Rocher des Fées) is a small ruined fortification built into a sheer cliff face at the hamlet of Les Echerts, between Mollens and Aminona on the eastern end of the Crans-Montana plateau. The site is reached by a short hiking path and the ruins are modest, but the setting — stones wedged into a vertical rock face above the plateau — is genuinely unusual.

Historians disagree on when and why it was built: some suggest it was a medieval watchtower, others a hermitage or small fortified outpost. The local name comes from old stories that no human hands could have built something in such a position, so the construction was attributed to the mountain fairies of Valais folklore. The walk from Aminona takes about 45 minutes each way and passes through pleasant forest. Good for a half-day outing when the main ski runs are too slushy or for families wanting a summer hike with a destination.

A story
The Fairy Rock is the ruin of a medieval castle built directly into a cliff face between Mollens and Aminona, in a position so improbable that local tradition attributed its construction to fairies. The exact origin of the structure is disputed by historians, but it was certainly a fortified point controlling the plateau above Sierre, and its dramatic setting in the rock face is unlike any other castle ruin in Valais.
