Venthône Castle

Venthône Castle is a well-preserved medieval tower in the small village of Venthône, sitting on a wooded terrace below and east of the main Crans-Montana plateau. The tower is the sole survivor of a larger fortified complex, but it is in good condition and forms the visual focus of a village that retains several old stone houses, a Romanesque church, and terraced vineyards.

The village is about 5 kilometres east of Aminona along a rural road — it makes a good destination for a half-day hike from the eastern end of the resort. The descent from Aminona to Venthône takes about 90 minutes on foot through larchwood and vineyard. The tower itself is not always open to visitors, but the exterior and village setting are worth the walk. A small restaurant in the village serves local wine from the terraced vineyards that drop toward Sierre below.

A story
Venthône Castle is a fortified tower that dates to the medieval period, sitting in the village of Venthône on a terrace above Sierre. The tower is all that survives of a larger fortified residence that belonged to the de la Tour-Chatillon family, one of the dominant noble houses of medieval Valais, whose power the bishops of Sion spent much of the fourteenth century trying to break.
