Tynemouth

Coastal town at the mouth of the Tyne with priory ruins and a surf beach

The North Sea coast village at the mouth of the Tyne, twenty-five minutes from the centre on the Metro. The headland is dominated by the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle — a fortified 11th-century Benedictine foundation perched above the harbour entrance with views up and down the coast. The high street is full of independent cafes and the weekend craft market in the old railway station is among the largest in the north.

Longsands beach below is the city's surfing beach and Blue Flag certified. Buy a fish-and-chips at Marshalls and eat it on the wall above the sands, or come back in the evening for cocktails at the Riley's Fish Shack.
