Rusholme Curry Mile

A mile of South Asian restaurants, sweetshops, and shisha cafes south of the city centre

The Curry Mile is the popular name for the stretch of Wilmslow Road running through Rusholme, about 2 km south of the city centre. It is the heart of Manchester's South Asian community and one of the most celebrated food streets in Britain: a dense concentration of Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi restaurants, sweetshops (the Indian sweets and mithai here are exceptional), shisha cafes, and halal butchers.

The restaurants range from cheap and cheerful to more elaborate. The quality is generally good; the speciality is Punjabi-style curry, but you will also find Bangladeshi, Kashmiri, and various regional South Asian cuisines. Most places are BYOB, licensing laws being what they are in this predominantly Muslim area. Come in the evening — the street lights up with neon signs and the pavements fill. It is lively, loud, and tasty, and it feels absolutely nothing like the rest of England.
