Manchester Cathedral

Medieval cathedral with exceptional carved choir stalls

Address Victoria Street, Manchester M3 1SX
Phone 0161 833 2220

A medieval foundation restored and extended in Victorian times, with visible remains of the original church. The carved misericords in the choir stalls are among the finest in England — look for the comic scenes of everyday medieval life hidden beneath the seats.

The building took heavy damage in the 1940 Blitz and again in the 1996 IRA bombing, but has been carefully restored each time. The wide nave and perpendicular Gothic windows give it a spacious, light feel unusual for English cathedrals. Free entrance.
