A bronze statue of Charles Dickens, seated with an open book, in a small landscaped corner of Guildhall Square. Sculpted by Martin Jennings and unveiled in 2014 for the bicentenary of Dickens's birth in Portsmouth.
It is a quiet, well-judged piece — Dickens looks contemplative rather than monumental — and it consciously breaks his own posthumous wish that no statue ever be made of him. Combine with a visit to the Charles Dickens Birthplace, ten minutes away on foot.
