Southsea Castle

Henry VIII coastal fort where the Mary Rose sank

A small, squat stone fort built by Henry VIII in 1544 as part of his chain of coastal artillery defences against a feared French invasion. It was from these ramparts that Henry watched his prize warship Mary Rose heel over and sink in the Solent in 1545. The castle now houses displays on its own history; the terrace looks out over the shingle beach of Southsea.
