Lumps Fort and Southsea Rose Garden

A small Victorian artillery fort east of the main Southsea seafront, now a public rose garden. The walls and a few of the casemates survive; the gun emplacements have been turned into beds of roses and herbaceous plants, and the grass parade ground is a pleasant lawn dotted with benches.

It is one of the quieter spots in Southsea and a good place to picnic. The adjacent Canoe Lake — a saltwater lake fed by the sea — has paddle boats in summer and a model boating club on weekends.

A story
The fort was built in the 1860s as part of a chain of 'Palmerston follies' — coastal forts ordered by Lord Palmerston against a French invasion that never came. By the 1930s it was redundant; the ramparts and parade ground were laid out as a rose garden instead, with the gun emplacements left empty and grassed over.
