Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral

Built up over eight hundred years and finished only in 1991. The east end is the medieval church of Thomas of Canterbury, founded in 1180 by Jean de Gisors and one of the earliest English churches dedicated to the recently murdered archbishop. The nave is 17th-century classical, the west towers and aisle 20th-century.

The cathedral sits a block from the harbour mouth in Old Portsmouth. Notable inside are the gilt and painted Charles II coat of arms (the present nave was built during his reign), the modern stained glass commemorating the Falklands War, and the small Lady Chapel under the south tower. Free entry.
