Arandas

Highland Jalisco tequila town known for traditional distilleries, agave fields, and big parish churches.

Arandas sits high in the Los Altos de Jalisco, surrounded by blue agave fields, grain farms, and the red soils that give highland tequila its softer, fruitier reputation. It is not as polished as Tequila town and it is a long day from Guadalajara, but that is part of the appeal: Arandas still feels like a working tequila town first and a visitor stop second.

The town's strongest draw is the tequila culture. Destileria La Altena is one of the respected old names in traditional production, tied to labels such as Tapatio, El Tesoro, and Tequila Ocho. Visits are not a walk-up museum experience, so arrange ahead if tequila is the reason you are coming.

The centre is compact and easy to walk. The huge neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Jose Obrero dominates one side of town, while the older Parroquia de Santa Maria de Guadalupe brings the pink-stone, painted-ceiling version of Los Altos church architecture. Between them are bakeries, tequila shops, and the Mercado Municipal, where the visit gets more everyday and more useful.

Arandas works best for travelers following Jalisco's tequila trail, or for anyone who would rather see a highland distillery town than another big-city suburb. Come with time to linger, not with a checklist.

Shopping

The useful shopping in Arandas is local rather than glossy. Look for tequila from Los Altos producers, bakery counters, and the municipal market, especially on Saturday when the town's traditional market day adds more stalls around the centre.

Things to Do

Arandas is best on foot, with church towers, tequila shops, and old distillery addresses close enough to link into a slow circuit through the centre. The headline is not a single monument but the mix: Los Altos tequila culture, strong parish architecture, and a town that has not been remade only for visitors.
