Guachochi sits high in the Sierra Tarahumara, far south of the better-known Copper Canyon rail stops. It is not a polished resort town, and that is part of the point: this is Raramuri country, with cold pine air, rough roads, waterfalls close to town, and canyon rims that feel much wilder than the viewpoints around Creel.
The reason to come is the landscape. Sinforosa Ravine is the main prize, a huge cut in the sierra reached by dirt road from town. Closer in, Lago de las Garzas and Cascada El Salto make Guachochi feel greener and more watery than many northern Mexican towns.
Guachochi works best for travelers already moving through Chihuahua's highlands who want a less obvious canyon base. Bring warm layers, patience for transport, and enough time to make the canyon trip unhurried.
