Tepatitlán, often shortened to Tepa, is a city in Los Altos de Jalisco, east of Guadalajara. It is cattle country, agave country, and church country, with a proud alteño identity that feels different from the big city just down the highway.
The historic centre is the best place to start. The Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís gives the main square its skyline, while the Santuario del Señor de la Misericordia and the Museo de la Ciudad add enough substance for a good walk.
Tepa is not a first-time Mexico essential, but it earns a day if you are already in Jalisco and want something more local than Guadalajara's usual side trips. Come for the churches, the market food, the agave fields, and the matter-of-fact confidence of a town that knows exactly what it is.
